Student, Metropolitan State University

Start Date  January 14, 2013

I was a student at Hamline University, planning to major in theater and minor in music, from 1974 to 1975. At the same time I also was working half-time at Control Data Corporation preparing documentation for a systems department. Eventually I decided that college was not where I wanted to be at that point in my life and, in part based on courses I had taken at The College of St. Catherine, I left Hamline to start a full-time career as a typographer and graphic designer. All these years later, that is still my primary career. Currently I am a contract typographer in the advertising department of a major national discount retailer.

In 1995 I started my second career as a writer, specifically as the "Leather Life" columnist for Lavender Magazine, the magazine for the GLBT and allied communities in Minneapolis/St. Paul and the Upper Midwest. I am still writing that column and have been published in several other publications as well. I also collected some of the columns into a book, Life, Leather and the Pursuit of Happiness, which was published by Nelson Borhek Press in 2010.

The column, the book, and some of the photographs in this eFolio document the life, history and culture of the community (some would say communities) about which I write: The leather/BDSM/fetish community, a sexual minority community that partially intersects with the GLBT community.

The Individualized BA degree I propose combines all these elements of my life and career experience and prior learning: advertising and graphic design, writing, and gender studies.
